The Distillery: Born way back in 1894 to an ancient family of sake producers, Masataka Taketsuru is originally from Takehara, a town located about sixty kilometers away from Hiroshima. Considered as the father of Japanese whisky, Masataka Taketsuru, after completing his studies in chemistry, found work in a company in Osaka, Settsu Shuzo, which for years had pursued the objective of producing whisky. In 1919, therefore, Masataka Taketsuru himself was sent to Scotland to acquire the necessary technical knowledge useful for the production of whisky. Here he becomes deeply passionate about the world of spirits, and comes to see as possible what had in the meantime become his most important dream: creating his own malt distillery in Japan. For this reason the young man enrolled at the University of Glasgow, at the same time starting to work as an apprentice at some Scottish distilleries. Then, in 1934, Masataka Taketsuru's greatest desire began to take shape, with the foundation of the "Nippo Kaju" company, followed by the construction of the Yoichi distillery on the island of Hokkaido. In 1952, the "Nippo Kaju" company changed its name, acquiring the definitive name of "Nikka Whisky", with which we know it today. The success was such that it allowed the installation of a second distillery, in 1969, on the island of Honsu.
